about

JOSEPH HAYDN, Piano Sonata in E-flat Major, Hob. XVI:52
- About the Composer
Haydn was a skillful player of both the piano and harpsichord. Although he didn't acquire a piano of his own until 1788, the dynamic and expressive features of his later works suggest that he had long been writing with it in mind. In fact, Haydn composed almost all his music at the keyboard. As he described his routine, "I get up early, and as soon as I have dressed, I kneel down and pray to God and the Holy Virgin that things may go well today. After some breakfast, I sit at the Klavier [the generic term for a keyboard instrument] and I begin to improvise."
- About the Work
Haydn composed with equal facility for both amateur and professional performers. His 60-odd keyboard sonatas span nearly half a century and offer a capsule overview of his artistic development. Many of them were inspired by women whose friendship Haydn cultivated in part to compensate for his own unfulfilling marriage. The dedicatee of this bravura showpiece, Therese Jansen, was a star pupil of Muzio Clementi and one of the most sought-after piano teachers in London.
- A Closer Listen
The E-flat-Major Sonata abounds in finger-twisting figurations, chains of thirds, and similar pyrotechnics. The first-movement Allegro is cast on a grand scale, with a declamatory opening in dotted rhythm, spitfire passagework, and wide-ranging modulations. Perhaps the most striking feature of the sonata is Haydn's choice of the Neapolitan key of E major, a half-step above the tonic, for the slow movement: The unexpected tonal shift accentuates the Adagio's searching, introspective mood. The sprightly Finale opens with an insistent motif (five repetitions of the same note) that Haydn proceeds to vary by register, ornamentation, and accent.
